What the Wooly Bear Caterpillar has to say...

Now we don't know about where YOU live, butt in OUR Neck of the Woods... we get these Wooly Bear Caterpillars in the Early Fall...   and THEY are supposed to be able to pawdict what kind of WINTER we are gonna get .    We trust the Wooly Bears as much as we trust the Weather Blabber Guyz.     We REALLY do...
If the Wooly Bears have a LONG Black HEAD pawt and a SHORT brown Middle and a LONG Brown BUTT...  that means Early Winter  and LATE spring...           If he has Mostly Brown on his body, it is gonna be a MILD Winter.       You get the idea...
So here is what the wooly bear looks like THIS year...
(PEE S.... NO that is not Busghetti that he is on... that is our Rock Guard mat)

His head is on the RIGHT side...   TAIL END(BUTT) on the left...

Closer up you can see that he has a good bit of Black on the front end... THAT means that we will have some COLD and SNOW in November and December...(EARLY)  then the long Brown Middle means a rather MILD WINTER in January and Feb. and March   and the very VERY short Black section means that spring should come Early in APRIL...   WE certainly hope he is RIGHT...
BUTT we always check with the GROUNDHOG on Feb. 2nd... JUST TO BE SURE...

Where we are in Upstate NY, not even the man on the TV who gets paid the big $$$$ can predict the correct weather at ANY given time.

Maybe Mommy should go look at that fuzzy black thing she saw crawling around our front door yesterday. She could have a long talk with him. You know, snow, rain, 60, sun, ice, 32? At least that's how we think the conversation would go.

Wow what a cool way to tell the weather. It is lovely over here but we are due to have a bad Winter as the crocus have been out too early. Have a serene Sunday.
Best wishes Molly

I have those wooly caterpillars. I had no idea that they are weather forecasters. I better go take a closer look. Good call to check with the groundhog. Can not be to careful. Or as my great auntie use to say, don't put all your eggs in one basket. I am not sure what eggs have to do with weather but if a caterpillar can predict the weather why not an egg.

Goose

We have caterpillars that look like that. We didn't know they were telling us the weather! Lee and Phod

you should replace our weather guy! Mom misinterpreted the caterpillar-weather-forecast (like always) as: I need immediately new boots, because we will get an early winter, then something for a mild winter and just in case we will get an early spring I need immediately some stuff for spring. Humans!

Mom gets grossed out by those. Right now she is saying "EEEK"!

You get out there and tell that woolly caterpillar that there's to be NO SNOW before November 20th and certainly NOT around the 12th!

We're glad to see that you check at least two reliable sources, Frankie and Ernie! All kidding asside, we just saw tons of those wooly cuties on our park walk on Friday, but didn't know about their weather predicting abilities...but we can assure you that we have more faith in those woolies than those fancy meteorologists (did we spell that right?)

Thanks for letting us know how to "read" those furry things!

We have those around here too but we haven't seen any yet. Mom said she had forgotten they were weather predictors. Thanks for the reminder.

Interesting. My Human used to tell me different and she learned it from her grandmother. Glad you rectified it!
