Blog Etiquette Questions #1

Ask US.....

QUESTION # 1. If someone asks you a question in their comment
should you Answer on Your Blog or go to Theirs?
FRANKIE Says: I have done this BOTH ways...PLUS at times, I even
answer in BOTH PLACES. If it is something that I think Most of my
readers would like to have answered, I do it on MY blog. If the
answer ONLY applies to that reader... I go to their blog...(IF they
have one). If it something that I think is VERY impawtant to
answer... I do it in BOTH locations.
I do think that it is the Reader/commentor/questioner's
responsibility to LOOK back at my blog and get the answer... BUTT I
also know How very much busy many are, so as a courtesy, I USUALLY try
to go to the questioner's blog to answer.

PUDDLES Says:I Puddles, goes to the commentors blog to respond cuz
it’s easier on both and most times furiends don’t haves da time to go
back to check to sees if their question has been responded too. But,
if it is a question alot are asking…leave a comment on your own post
and then go to da other blogs…copy and paste it.
But if it is a commentor withs NO blog then you should respond on your post.

QUESTION #2. If we mention someone's blog in a post, do we HAVE to
provide a link to them?
FRANKIE Says: It would be NICE to always have the TIME to do that.
We don't always have that Luxury. And TIME is a Luxury for MANY of
us. I would say that any reader that WANTS to find his/her way to a
blog that you mention WILL FIND A WAY TO DO SO. I would rather take
some responsibility for reading blogs and hope that the time the
WRITER saves will go towards commenting and composition of new posts.
If you Have time do it... If NOT... don't fret... I would
prefer to have Your Post to read and enjoy, than to put You in an
uncomfortable situation of trying to balance the time.

PUDDLES Says: I almost always link to da blog…unless I is being lazy
then I don’t. Did dat answer your question? Ummm, okays then…proper
bloggin’ etiquette states dat you should link…it’s in da handbook
(Frankie, they didn’t gets da handbook).

QUESTION # 3. AWARDS... the problem is that it takes sooooo much
TIME to complete all of the Award's Duties.. Ex. Listing 10 to 15
things about myself and then Listing (with LINKS) 5 to 10 others who
we have chosen to receive the Award next. How can we show our
APPRECIATION w/out spending sooooo much TIME on the FOLLOW UP... while
NOT hurting the gifter's feelings.
FRANKIE Says: Tough one!!! This is more about Time.
FURST OFF... I (pawsonally) would like to ask those Wonderful and
Considerate and CREATIVE souls who START these Awards... PLEASE
make your rules and responsibilities SHORT. SHORT SHORT.
I can only speak from my own experience and my own Heart here. I
do not always have the TIME to go through all of the motions either.
SOOOOOO I sometimes just put the Award up and say THANKS and then
Offer it to EVERYONE who would LIKE to have it. Another thing
that I have done (to save Myself and OTHERS ... TIME) is to simply say
I am only giving this to... a NEW BLOGGER. I Still remember the
very furst Award that I was given. It made me feel SPECIAL AND
WELCOME. THEN I tell that New Blogger that they only need to give
the Award to ONE other person. WHY... ??? They may NOT KNOW 10
other Blog Furends YET... Butt this is Just enough to HELP them get
their Paw in the door so to speak.
NOW>>>> to actually answer this question let ME (Frankie
Furter) say... Do what you Can and what you feel Comfortable doing.
If you get the award at a really busy time for you... DON'T Worry
... We are all FURENDS here in Blogville and WE SERIOUSLY DO
UNDERSTAND. I don't even think an aPAWlogy is necessary.

PUDDLES Says: We all loves getting awardees from our friends but
sometimes time is an issue. You can always just post da award on your
blog and thank da blog dat gaves it to you and voila…post done.

QUESTION #4. How do you set a Post to Auto Publish.. in advance???
FRANKIE Says: I do NOT know about Wordpress... butt with
Blogger... you just write your post as usual... when you finish
Scroll Clear down to the bottom and on the Left side under the Text
Space it will say.... Post Options ... Click on Post
Options and on the Right side there will be TWO boxes. You need to
set BOTH. the furst is for the DATE you want the post to Publish.
You can set it to publish Months ahead if you want.. Just be sure to
check and see that you have the EXACT month day and YEAR that you
wish it to publish. Next you will need to decide the TIME of
day you want it to publish.. AM (Midnight Until Noon) or PM (Noon to
Midnight). .... Once the Date and Time are set the way you want
them to be... you simply scroll down and click on PUBLISH.
<<<< >>>>> For the Nervous Nellies (Like My MOM is) who like to
Double Check on stuffs... You can then go to EDIT POSTS on your
dashboard. Click it and it will SHOW the Post as... SCHEDULED and
tell the day and date that you set.

PUDDLES Says: I don't do it so I can't answer it. I always leave mine
in da draft.

QUESTION #5. How can one become more EFFICIENT at Posting and Commenting???
FRANKIE Says: I would like to put this one out there for all of
the readers of this post... Please share any Secrets or Tips that
YOU use to make the whole process... more ummmmmmm relaxing and
stress free. PLEASE feel free to comment HERE >> OR to actually write
up one of your Posts and give us your input. We are ALL effected
by the TIME Monster.
ONE thingy that I do is... Comment on blogs that have special
meaning to me. Either they are Sad, Scary, Informational, or Funny.
And I JUDGE THOSE on a Day to Day basis. If I have the TIME.. I
comment to all that I follow... If not... I pick and choose based on
the content of that pawticular post. I never ever miss reading a
post that tells of a CALL TO THE BRIDGE or of an Injury or Illness...
I may not comment... butt I assure you I DO take Note of all such
posts. I will comment if at all possible. I have even been known
to >>> write myself a NOTE to come BACK to the blog and comment later.
The other thing I do... when short on TIME... I simply do NOT
comment on blogs that require me to do the Word Varification step...
I KNOW and UNDERSTAND the need for Protecting our computers from SPAM
AND HACKERS AND VIRUS'... butt it REALLY takes about 5 extra mins.
(for me, at least) to jump through that hoop... I would LOVE to see
Blogger go to something like what Wordpress does... the commentor
only needs to jump the hoop... the VERY FURST time they go to a
blog... after that... it is a pure pleasure to leave comments on
that blog. Fast and Easy.. Blogger.... Are you
LISTENING TO ME HERE???
IF Wordpress can do this... soooooo can Blogger.

I would also say that it is grrrreat to have ONE or two posts.... always set to go... either in Draft form or... Pre-Posted with a date set well into the next week.... then.. if you run short of time you can always put that post up for the day. It helps me when I get busy with my Gwalk A Moley work and stuffs like that.
PUDDLES Says: One word fur ya…PRIORITIZE! Once you begins a blog, you
haves no life other than blogging. Try what we do, get up at 4am and
start bloggin’.
But, seriously...if I am not ables to leave comments oneday than I DO
NOT post on MY blog to be fairs. I goes through my dashboard and hit
da blogs in order.

QUESTION # 6 What about Comments from those who do NOT have a blog
of their own???
FRANKIE Says: I LOVE those folks. I think that we should be
FLATTERED that they come to Blogville and Read our Posts. I think
they are just the VERY BERRIES!!!

PUDDLES Says: Hang on, I gotta gets a beer furs dis one….
Okays, I’m ready nows.
If you want to comment then by golly comment cuz we all loves to get
‘em. I ain’t gonna lie, I enjoy all my comments. I feel very honored
dat they would leaves a comment on my little bity blog.
However, it does make it difficult to communicate withs 'em cuz they
don't has a blog. Dis is da time where we bloggers can respond to them
on our own blogs. OR, dat commentor could set up their blogger profile
with access to their email if they is comfortable in doing so.

Now then, these answers are from our OWN experience and limited knowledge. We are NOT perfect... Sooooo if you disagree with an answer feel free to speak your mind... In a KIND manner. If you would like to comment... anonomously you can email to frankiefurter(AT)wildblue(DOT)net
We sincerely hope that we answered these questions fully. If not, please tell us and we will TRY OUR BEST to do better.

Wow! Are we twins? Because those were great answers and most Mango-like for sure. I want to follow up on the whole commenting thing due to momma's recent declaration that we need to cut back.

Sometimes when I get backed up, if there is one pal who has done many posts I will read them all, but only comment on the most recent ones.

But I agree that it is just too hard to visit and comment on everybody (much as I would love to) so I try to make sure I get to most of my pals at least once a week and always send supportive thoughts to those in need.

Slobbers,
Mango

P.S. I am not a fan of replying to questions on my own blog in the comments section. I don't think the questioners ever go back there, but yuh, a big important question can be answered in a post.

Some great advice guys. Although we disagree about leaving comments on Wordpress. It always gives us fits. We thinks it has something to do with no scripts. We has trouble commenting on lots of things because of no scripts.

Wow, I learned a lot! I have been breaking lots of rules - just kidding, I haven't really ...I don't think. That's interesting about the word verification thing, Frankie. I have it on my blog and have considered getting rid of it. Has anyone who doesn't have word verification had problems with spam?

Hi Frankie. This has given us a lot of noms for thought. I don't have much time for commenting now. TIME again, but I hope that this post opens up some discussion and we can come and kind of paw it around later. And yes, captcha should DIE. I'm sorry to be harsh, but it should.

Woof! Woof! This is great Frankie ... glad you brought it up.

#1 typically when you receive a blog comment you get an email notification ... RESPOND to this ... its the best way.
#2 yes its nice to do a link
#3 yes having problems with awards ... its very nice n thoughtful but overwhelming. I decided to take n thank the giver for the award but will not do a post. I currently took the award slidephoto on my blog.
#4 we've been doing the auto post too ... we blame blogger if there was a mistake on the time posting
#5 As always we make our post simple n real n mostly about me. YES we are having a hard time making comments on all the blogs we follow. We read them on google reader. Try to make comment only if the post is interesting. My mom is developing a list of all doggie/kitty bloggers that currently following our blog. Will share n let you know when she's done (maybe early next year).
#6 Yes I do have lots of lovely comments from people who have no blogs or blogs not related to pets.

Lastly, we were thinking to move to Wordpress ... but we find Blogger as being easier n our blog is being found through google. Not sure about being better ... would love to know others viewpoint.

Oh! this is long ....
Golden thanks for this Frankie. Lots of Golden Woofs, Sugar

Great post, Frankie and Puddles. It was amazing to us how many others have the same concerns as we do. We are struggling to keep up with all the blogs. We try very hard to leave a comment regularly on the blogs who are faithful visitors to us. But we also do leave comments on others that don't know us as well. It does get a little frustrating, however, when we are really good about commenting on other blogs and they never leave one for us. Just once in a while would be nice.

As for the comment verification word, we have tried it both ways. We think Frankie's suggestion to us about putting comment moderation on posts older than five days has worked the best to eliminate the annoying spammers who leave comments in a language we can't read. But we may have to change the number of days since we are posting less lately - gotta get at the Momster about that.

Awards - everyone loves getting them, but they can become a problem when there are lots of rules and when you get the same award multiple times.

We rarely have time to go back to a blog to see if our question was answered in the comment. We like to see it addressed either via email or in a future post. Sugar suggested commenting via email through the comment. That works for some comments but not all are attached to an email that can be replied to.

We also have comments from people who don't have a blog. We would love it if they would somehow link to an email so we can thank them for being kind enough to visit us.

Wow, we could probably write a book here, but we will stop here. We look forward to another round of questions.

This was an AWESOME post! Good Job Guys! I try to answer questions on the question asker's blog - I think that's easiest. And, if it's important, I'll blog about it. I also like how Jen and her 2 Brown Newfoundlands blog a Q&A area on their blog for questions that were asked during the previous blog.

As for commenting on everyone else - I try to get to everyone on most days and usually try to appoligize in my blog if it's an extra busy week (like this one, but blogging is a good escape from doing the actual homework that mom has).

I think this blog should be sent to all bloggers who set up an account from this day forward!

Thank you, thank you for all the most wonderful advices! On days that I don't have time to visits everybuddy, I make SURE that I always, always visit and comment on the bloggies of furends who've taken the time to comment on my bloggie that day.

And thank you for clearing up the question about commenters who don't have bloggies. I've always worried about that cuz I don't want to be rude and seem like I'm ignoring them or anything. Cuz I really DO appreciate that they came over and commented!

Anyways, I sees some very good points dat I left out.

Furst I wanna say dat I do not use captcha BUT I do not allow anonymous commentors anymore. Since I had da no anon. I get absolutely NO spam.

Also, I have my blog set up to where when I comment on a blog they can automatically respond to me through email and I LOOOOOOOOVE it. I know several bloggers dat do dis, it is less time consuming.

I disagree about the captcha thing, but that's just me. It only takes us about ten seconds to do that if we want to comment, and it keeps a lot of the Japanese porn off our blog, which we've had a serious problem with. Yeah, Blogger should fix that, too, and give us a place to report that crap to, but they don't, and they don't seem to take it seriously, either. Anyroo, I have a feeling that my readers want to have fun when they come to our blog, and we hope that their idea of fun isn't looking at naked underage girls.

As for the rest, I really agree with you! Two dewclaws up!

The awards well, I do find it takes time and I cannot always think of things about me, beleive it or not!!
Thats why I don't have them on the blog anymore, plus they do seem to do the rounds as in we all get them.
Plus it is a struggle to keep up with every body! I have found having blogged for only 7 months! I am slowing down. Don't worry I'm not jacking it in!!! there life in the old dog yet!!

Thanks for this! I've always wondered about thanking someone for stopping by and leaving a comment. The suggestion of emailing the person is good but I've never done it because my email address wouldn't immediately indicate who I am or that it's related to my blog so I worry that it may get deleted since that person wouldn't know who I am.

I know a lot of people don't like word verifications either. I thought I'd use it to avoid spam. But if I approve comments, I suppose it really isn't necessary. I've been kind of thinking of taking it off. Maybe I will.

I've also wondered about answering questions in comments too.

Thank you for the reminder to always look at the glass as being HALF FULL! I struggle with that because I'm naturally negative. It's always a work in progress.

I am back. How do I set it up so I don't accept anonymous (what Puddles was talking about) comments. I only see three options - accept all comments, accept registered users, accept comments with google accounts. Any idea which I should select?

What is the benefit of this over comment moderation?

You are not called Frankie Furter for nothing!! You is the MAN!!! THANK YOU for doing this post and like a gentleman, taking things in your own paws. My secretary complains she needs a raise because the word verification is way too time consuming. It is time that could be used on another furiends blog. I took all that into consideration and did have to agree with the secretary. I gave her permission to remove it from mine about a month ago. My blog is open to all and so far I have not had any spam issues. 2nd: I agree with the awards. Maybe one or two items versus fifteen is much much better. 3rd. Because of the time monster, my secretary must have another job besides this one so that she can continue to bring me lots of presents. So we try to visit all the furiends we follow as much as possible. Take for instance this evening. We were saddend to hear of one of our furiends was called to the bridge on Oct 4th ~ RIP Brind'Amour. We felt horrible that we hadn't visited his bloggie in a couple of weeks. But we did pay our respects. My secretary wanted the rest of the night off cause her eyes were leaking again. I said no way. Work woman. So I guess I must cut this short before she walks away.... I just want tothatnk you and Puddles for the blog etiquette idea.

Hugs & smoochies! XOXO

Hey you should tell the peoples that if they put their email addy in their profile thingy then you can email your reply to their comment, instead of havin to hunt down their page and leave a comment there.

S'what I do, butt a lotta peoples don't even have their email address on there blog profile so I can't even reply.

that makes me sad sometimes.
